“Antisemitism in the (Post-)Migrant Society. Experiences, Articulations and Formations of Antisemitism in Russian- and Ukrainian-Speaking Migrant Milieus” (AntOstMig)
The project investigates experiences, forms of articulation, and formations of antisemitism among Jewish and non-Jewish Russian- and Ukrainian-speaking migrant milieus in Germany. Against the backdrop of multiple political crises and conflicts, AntOstMig examines transformations in individual experiences of antisemitism and collective ways of addressing it, as well as paradigmatic formations of antisemitism in social media that shape these milieus. In addition, the project analyzes how antisemitism is discussed and negotiated within civil society organizations located in migrant milieus shaped by biographical relations to Eastern Europe within (post)migrant society.
The advertised position is located in a Subproject, which examines knowledge formations within the discussion and practical work on antisemitism in civil society organizations. Based on focus group discussions with Jewish and non-Jewish civil society actors, the subproject reconstructs collective ways of addressing antisemitism as well as lines of conflict and processes of negotiation of differnces within the field.
The project is conducted in close collaboration with civil society partners. Following a Participatory Action Research approach, these actors are actively involved in the collaborative research process and contribute to both the analysis of civil society knowledge formations and the development of knowledge transfer formats and outputs.
Your responsibilities
- independent academic work toward your doctoral qualification (PhD) within the thematic framework of the subproject
- conducting and analyzing focus groups and qualitative interviews
- contributing to the analysis of civil society knowledge formations and discourses on antisemitism
- Collaboration with civil society project partners within the participatory research approach
- publishing your own research in German and/or English
- academic and organizational collaboration in the overall project, in particular in joint publications, project meetings, conference participation, public outreach, and knowledge transfer activities of the project in the team’s working languages German and English
- Participation in activities of the Viadrina Center B/ORDERS IN MOTION
Requirements
- an excellent Master’s degree in the social sciences or cultural studies (e.g., sociology, anthropology, cultural studies, political science, Jewish studies, or a related discipline)
- demonstrable knowledge of research on antisemitism and critical antisemitism education, racism, or memory cultures in migration societies
- demonstrable experience with qualitative methods in the social and cultural sciences; experience with focus group discussions is desirable, as well as
- interest in and willingness to implement participatory and collaborative research approaches
- very good German and English language skills (C1 Level CEFR), as well as knowledge of either Ukrainian or Russian
- first academic publications are desirable but not required”
- interest in knowledge transfer and media work in and with migrant communities
